Imbarė Hillfort is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and significant sites in the Kretinga district. Cleared of low-value trees, it highlights its unique shape and historical importance. The fortification, which stood on the hill during the 10th–13th centuries, was the administrative and economic center of the Couronian territory of Ceklis. The importance of the castle was so great that it even competed with the castle of Apulė. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the settlement at the foot of the hill had urban characteristics, with even a street system uncovered.
The castle was abandoned around 1263, and later, a manor was built on its site. Legend has it that this manor sank into the earth. Imbarė Hillfort is not just the remains of an ancient Couronian castle – it is a comprehensive archaeological complex that reveals the medieval history of the Ceklis territory.
