Kretinga Lourdes is a special place where both the faithful and those seeking peace can find tranquility. Established by the Franciscans in 1933 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Lourdes in France, this Lourdes was built from the stones of a demolished brewery. At its opening, it attracted as many as 25,000 pilgrims from all over Lithuania. Although no miraculous apparitions occurred here, it is believed that the spring flowing next to Lourdes has healing properties.
During the Soviet era, the white marble altar was destroyed, but the sculptures that still adorn the site have survived. The nearby St. Mary’s Square has become the center of various events hosted by the Franciscan Gymnasium. However, each day, Kretinga Lourdes invites visitors to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature – it remains one of the most picturesque corners of the town.
