In Kretinga, one of the most significant historical landmarks attracts travelers – the Franciscan monastery and the church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This impressive ensemble was built in the early 17th century by the great Grand Duchy of Lithuania military leader Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius as a thanksgiving for his victory in the Battle of Salaspils. The complex not only transformed the face of Kretinga but also became an important center of culture and religion.
It houses unique historical objects: the oldest functioning organ in Lithuania, a painting of St. Anthony, the Chodkevičių family sarcophagi, some of the oldest doors in the country, and a historical crypt. The visit culminates with a climb to the church tower, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Kretinga from a height of 42 meters.
