Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė, a renowned writer, publicist, and educator, spent nearly four decades in the town of Joniškėlis, which during that time became a center for Lithuanian culture and education. Many prominent national figures gathered there, and the town experienced a cultural and Lithuanian renaissance. Born in the Puziniškis Manor in the Panevėžys district, surrounded by an educated noble family, Gabrielė was introduced to the beauty of the Lithuanian language and culture at an early age. Her father, doctor Jonas Leonas Petkevičius, and her mother Malvina, a graduate of the Vilnius
Gymnasium, cared for their daughter's education. Gabrielė's learning was greatly influenced by the notable linguist Laurynas Ivinskis, who taught her from 1866 to 1868. Gabrielė Petkevičaitė's contribution to Lithuanian political life was also significant – she became the first woman elected to the Constituent Seimas of Lithuania in 1920 and even participated in the Lithuanian presidential elections as the first female candidate. Her legacy lives on to this day – the Joniškėlis Gymnasium has been named after her, commemorating Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė's role in Lithuanian history.
