A monumental cross and memorial plaques have been installed in Darbėnai Market Square to honor the partisans of the Žemaičiai Military District's Kardo Detachment who perished in Darbėnai Parish between 1945 and 1953. The site also commemorates freedom fighters killed in the NKVD–MVD–MGB district office and partisans and exiles who actively resisted Soviet occupation from 1945 to 1965.

The memorial plaques were created in 1992 based on a design by artist Rita Gorodeckienė. The monumental cross, unveiled in 2000, was crafted by Adolfas Kontrimas, and the entire composition was reconstructed in 2006 under the initiative of architect Gytis Tiškus. This site serves as a historical symbol, reminding visitors of the challenging era of freedom struggles and the bravery of its heroes.
