The Museum of the 1863 Uprising in Paberžė, housed in the manor of Baron Stanislovas Šilingas built in 1793, offers a profound journey through key chapters of Lithuanian history. It was here that priest Antanas Mackevičius organized one of the first insurgent groups in the Kaunas Governorate, fighting in 1863 for freedom, the abolition of serfdom, and against the oppression of Tsarist rule.

The museum showcases weapons, documents, personal belongings of the insurgents, and works by prominent Lithuanian artists that reflect the struggles of the uprising. The Paberžė Church, reconstructed under A. Mackevičius' guidance, features crosses and an altar crafted by the renowned folk artist Vincas Svirskis. Father Stanislovas’ unique collections of liturgical art, metalwork, and sculptures are displayed in the parish house and barn, inviting visitors to explore this rich cultural and historical legacy.

The 1863 Uprising Museum in Paberžė, established in 1993, is one of the most significant witnesses to Lithuanian history. Located in the manor of Baron Stanislovas Šilingas, built in 1793, the museum tells the story of the struggle against Tsarist oppression and serfdom. It was here that priest Antanas Mackevičius, one of the uprising leaders, formed one of the first insurgent groups in the Kaunas Governorate and began active combat for freedom in March 1863. Within the manor, he often met with Stanislovas Šilingas, a supporter of the uprising, to discuss strategic plans. Visitors to the museum can see weapons used by the insurgents, personal belongings, important historical documents, and artworks by Lithuanian artists capturing
the spirit of the uprising. The Paberžė Church, built by local craftsmen and reconstructed by Antanas Mackevičius, is not only historically significant but also an artistic treasure, preserving crosses and an altar carved by folk artist Vincas Svirskis. The museum's unique atmosphere is enriched by Father Stanislovas’ "saugotuvės" (collections), housed in the parish house and barn. These feature collections of liturgical art, sculptures, paintings, and metalwork. Paberžė also hosts cultural events such as art workshops, Father Stanislovas' beloved readings of R. M. Rilke, and various educational programs. Visit this extraordinary historical site where the fight for freedom, art, and spiritual culture converge.
