Anykščiai St. Apostle Evangelist Matthew Church is the tallest Catholic place of worship in Lithuania, with its crosses rising to 79 meters. The church's history dates back to the 15th century when King Casimir Jagiellon established a parish and built the first church on the banks of the Šventoji River. The current neo-Gothic church was constructed between 1899 and 1909, designed by the renowned architect Nikolai Andreyev. However, its towers were destroyed during World War I. In 1929, the spires
were rebuilt in a simpler form, yet the church retained its grandeur. The interior is enriched by art collections gathered by longtime priest Monsignor Albertas Talačka, which can be admired both inside the church and in its courtyard. Climbing to the observation deck in the right tower, 30 meters above ground, offers a stunning view of Anykščiai, showcasing its beauty in every season. This church stands as a monument to faith, culture, and art, preserving the deep history of the parish.
