Rokiškis is the only town in Lithuania known for its painted shutters, which adorn the facades of many homes. This unique tradition began in 2003 when artist Arūnas Augutis proposed reviving the art of shutter decoration. Since 2005, painting workshops have become a long-standing tradition, carried on for 17 years by artists from all over Lithuania and neighboring countries.
To date, more than 300 shutters have been painted, gracing the streets of Rokiškis, including Respublikos, Kauno, Kęstučio, Ąžuolų, Sodų, Vilniaus, and Mikėno Streets, as well as homes in the villages of Jurgiškiai, Kamajai, Antakriaunis, Bajorai, Salos, and Šetekšniai. Painted shutters are not only works of art but also a living tradition, enriching the cultural heritage of the city and district while attracting tourists seeking unique places to visit.
