On June 22, 1941, with the onset of the Wehrmacht invasion into the Soviet Union, the Lithuanian Activists Front (LAF) uprising erupted in Lithuania against the retreating Soviet forces. The insurgents aimed to take over key strategic locations, local administrations, and restore Lithuanian independence. However, these ambitions were suppressed by the Nazi occupying authorities. In July of the same year, a brutal execution took place in the Vyžuonos forest, where 67 people were shot. This site now stands as an important witness to history, inviting visitors to remember Lithuania's tragic past and its struggle for freedom.
