The stretches of the Apšė River valley along the Lithuania-Latvia border represent a unique natural area where intensive agricultural activities are diminishing. This region is dominated by wet meadows, pastures, and natural grassy vegetation, with some meadows transitioning into shrublands. This area is particularly important for the corncrake—a rapidly declining bird that inhabits moist meadows and river valleys. The corncrake is elusive, hiding in tall grass and seldom flying, but its distinctive, monotonous call from males is especially audible in the evenings. They nest on the ground, and face significant challenges due to early mowing and the use of chemicals. The corncrake is listed in the Lithuanian Red Book as a protected species.
