Skuodas is a town closely associated with Jonas Jeronimas Chodkevičius, a major historical figure who secured Magdeburg rights for the town in 1568, allowing for the development of trade and the organization of markets. This event marked the development of Skuodas as an important center in Samogitia. Chodkevičius, the founder of the town, also established a marketplace and held trade fairs, stimulating the region's economy. Furthermore, Chodkevičius was a significant supporter of the Reformation and built a Lutheran Evangelical church in Skuodas. During his
tenure, Protestants had considerable influence in Samogitia. Later, influenced by the Counter-Reformation movement, Chodkevičius converted to Catholicism and contributed to the establishment of the Vilnius Jesuit College. His achievements were commemorated in 2003 when a monument dedicated to this historical figure was erected in Skuodas. The monument was sculpted by Marius Grušas and designed by architect Adomas Skiezgilas. It serves not only as a historical memorial site but also as a symbol of Skuodas, reflecting its significance in Lithuanian history.
