The Šaukliai Boulder Field is a magnificent landscape reserve situated in Salantai Regional Park, approximately 3 km southwest of Mosėdis. This unique reserve, spanning 82 hectares, protects relics of the Ice Age – numerous massive boulders that traveled here from Sweden, Finland, and the Baltic Sea bed, brought by glaciers 12,000 to 13,000 years ago. The largest boulders reach up to 3 meters in diameter, with a total volume of about 300,000 cubic meters.
The Šaukliai Boulder Field boasts a distinctive flora – here, one can find 125 plant species, among which junipers grow up to 6 meters tall. The area is special not only for its plant diversity but also for its fauna: it is home to lizards, common frogs,
slow worms, and one can find male corncrakes and rare lichen habitats. The educational trail in the reserve features a 300-meter wooden walkway, accessible to disabled visitors, ensuring everyone can explore this unique locale.
The educational trail in the Šaukliai Boulder Field, through a juniper forest, invites visitors to discover this unique natural corner via a 1-2 hour route. Additionally, exotic mouflons live here, observed in a designated enclosure in wild conditions. This herd is the largest in Lithuania. Local legends tell that the boulders are petrified Swedish warriors who attempted to conquer the Skuodas region. They were supposedly punished by pagan gods and thus remained kneeling as stones.
