At the end of 1944, in the Mosėdis region of Kretinga County, in the forests of Šatraminiai, Žalgiriai, Ledžiai, and Peldinė, the first partisan groups emerged. These brave young Lithuanians sought to evade Soviet army mobilization and were determined to fight for freedom. They became part of the Lithuanian Freedom Army (LLA) and joined the Žemaičiai Legion, led by Zigmas Apulskis-Starkus, later joining the Alka Brigade led by Kazys Kontrimas. The fighters operating in the Mosėdis and Skuodas districts often faced pressure from Soviet forces.
On August 3, 1945, Soviet forces,
including NKVD and Red Army divisions, conducted a military operation in the forests of Mosėdis and Žalgiriai villages. During this operation, partisan Leonas Jablonskas was killed, and captured partisans Aleksandras Einikis and Pranas Meškys were executed in the village. Five farmsteads in Žalgiriai were also destroyed during the operation. The site of the battle and the partisans' deaths was included in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage in 2017. Today, this site attracts history and tourism enthusiasts looking to connect with the spirit of Lithuania's freedom struggles.
