In 1944, LLA partisan groups emerged in the forests of Ylakiai, located in Kretinga and Mažeikiai counties, to fight against Soviet occupation. One such group was led by Albertas Jasmontas-Žiogas, a former officer, who, along with his comrades, fought for Lithuania’s freedom. In 1945, their camp in Laumiai Forest was discovered by NKVD forces, resulting in a battle where the commander and several partisans were killed. The bodies were desecrated and buried in a marshy peat bog in Mažeikiai. In 2017, this site was included in the Register of Cultural Heritage.

With the onset of Soviet occupation in 1944, the Lithuanian Freedom Army (LLA) partisan groups formed in Kretinga County and the surrounding Ylakiai forests to fight for an independent Lithuania. Ylakiai became the epicenter of these battles, where a group led by former officer Albertas Jasmontas, known as Žiogas, was active. He was supported by his brother Edvardas Jasmontas-Barzda and other brave fighters. The partisans maintained a base in Pliktelė Forest near Gailiškiai village, which was attacked by NKVD forces on August 5, 1945. During the battle, group leader Albertas Jasmontas, Leonas Šarapnickas, Kazimieras
Tauryla, and several others were killed. The tragic story of Žiogas’s group embodies the determination of Lithuanian partisans to fight for national freedom, despite the dangers they faced. After the battle, the bodies of the fallen were desecrated in Mažeikiai’s market square and later buried in a peat bog, now the site of residential buildings. In 2017, this historical site was recorded in the Register of Cultural Heritage, designated with a unique code 39078. This place commemorates the significance of partisan struggles in Lithuanian history and their contribution to preserving freedom.
