In 2014, the Memory Square was established at the intersection of J. Basanavičius and Dotnuva Streets to honor freedom fighters. Here, a globe-shaped monument designed by architect Marius Mateika was erected, which later became part of the future memorial. This monument, dedicated "To Those Who Fought Against the Occupiers in the Pursuit of a Free and Independent State," was built using funds bequeathed by local expatriates.
Plans for the memorial include the creation of an additional hill that will commemorate the names of all those from the region who sacrificed their lives for Lithuania’s freedom.
