In 1930, marking the 500th anniversary of Vytautas the Great’s death, an Independence Monument was erected in Lazdijai’s market square with funds from local residents. Dedicated to the fighters for Lithuania’s freedom, the monument’s author remains unknown, but it became an important symbol of Lazdijai and was the central site for official celebrations. In 1940, when the Soviets arrived, the monument was vandalized and eventually demolished after World War II. In 1990, it was restored and ceremoniously unveiled once again, with fragments of the original now displayed in the courtyard of the Lazdijai Regional Museum.
