Bitė Vilimaitė-Šukienė (1943–2014), a renowned Lithuanian writer, was born in Lazdijai. She mastered a concise writing style, conveying deep meaning within the short, aesthetic form of her stories. Her creative journey spanned Kaunas and Vilnius, and she spent her final years in Avižieniai village in the Lazdijai district.

Writer's Awards:

  • 1975: Received the Žemaitė Literary Prize
  • 1992: Awarded Best Book of the Year for her short story collection The Music of the Skating Rink
  • 1997: Received the Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Prize for her book The Snowbound Train
  • 2003: Awarded the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Prize for The Sun of the Fern Forests

In 2021, a memorial plaque featuring a butterfly symbol was installed at the entrance of the Lazdijai Public Library to honor the writer in her hometown. The plaque was created by sculptor Algis Kasparavičius.
