In 1944, Trakai Forest became a witness to a historic battle when Lieutenant Vladas Stepulevičius, known by the codename Mindaugas, led a group of partisans against the troops of the 4th NKVD Border Command. This skirmish marked the first battle of partisan resistance in Trakai Forest, during which several fighters were killed, including Antanas Stepulevičius, Boleslovas Stočkūnas, and Germans Otto Bauer and Adolf Mercas.
In this battle, the partisans displayed courage and determination to fight for independence, and Trakai Forest became a symbol embodying the struggle of the Lithuanian partisans. A visit to this historic region allows tourists to gain a better understanding of the significance of the Lithuanian partisan movement and their fight for freedom.
