On December 19, 1945, a battle took place in Navikai village (now in the Lazdijai district) between partisans of the Dainava district's Veisiejai battalion and a Soviet NKVD unit. During this conflict, battalion commander Stasys Soroka-Mindaugas (born in 1926 in Paveisininkai village, now in the Lazdijai district) and his adjutant Leonas Ivoška-Lapinas (born in 1925 in Petroškiai village, now in the Lazdijai district) were killed. Their remains were buried by the stribai (local collaborators), but their memory remains significant to Lithuania's history. This event is one of many examples of resistance struggles, demonstrating the fighters' determination and sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom.
