At this historic site, on November 20, 1945, a battle occurred with the Chekists, during which the squad leader of the Dzūkija region partisans, Jonas Neifalta-Lakūnas, was killed. Born in 1913 in Giraitė village, in the Šventežeris district, he became a notable partisan of the Dainava district. On that day, when soldiers from the NKVD's Krosna sub-district and border troops surrounded a partisan group in Atesninkai village, Jonas Neifalta-Lakūnas and his comrades fiercely fought while attempting to retreat toward Kalniškės forest. Injured, he managed to shoot a nearby Chekist, but feeling he could no longer continue the fight, he used his weapon on himself. Previously, on May 16, 1945, he had led a large partisan unit in the Kalniškės battle, where they confronted significantly larger NKVD forces.
