Vyžuonos is a cozy town located by the Vyžuona River, which flows into the Šventoji River, and serves as the center of the Vyžuonos municipality. It is believed that the town's name originated from the river's name, but the locals associate it with the pagan god Vyža, who was depicted as a snake. This symbol has been linked to Vyžuonos since ancient times and adorns the town's coat of arms. The entrance to the town is decorated with Snake sculptures: in 1979, artists Henrikas Orakauskas and Algirdas Indrašius created a sculptural sign, and in 2016, to commemorate the 610th anniversary of Vyžuonos, folk artist Vytautas Šemelis erected a new Snake sculpture.
