Bronze Heart in Memory of Bernard Lown

In 2021, the city of Utena was adorned with a new bronze sculpture—a heart dedicated to honoring the renowned local figure Bernard Lown, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and world-renowned cardiologist, the inventor of the modern defibrillator. This artwork reflects Utena's connection to this historic personality.
The sculpture was created as part of historian Sandra Dastikienė’s project “Old Neighbors”, which aims to draw attention to the Jewish community's heritage in Utena. The artwork was crafted by metal and jewelry artist Lauryna Kiškytė. The heart’s bronze structure intertwines aortas with plant motifs, symbolizing Lown’s ecological perspective and his care for nature and the environment in which we live. The sculpture is prominent and tactile, inviting visitors to touch it—reminiscent of Lown's words that touch breaks down barriers between people and nations.
