Historical documents testify that during the occupation of Nazi Germany, Jews living in Utena and the surrounding towns were relocated to a ghetto established on Ežero Street. On July 14, 1941, it was ordered to evacuate all residents of Utena of Jewish descent to the Šilinė Forest within 12 hours, where they were held in an open camp. From there, people were taken to Skaistašilis Forest, where mass executions and burials occurred.
In 1988, a sculpture titled “Pain,” created by Valentinas Šimonėlis, was erected at the site of the mass killings. This location is included in the Register of Cultural Heritage as a memorial site for the victims of genocide, where an obelisk stands in honor of the 8,000 affected individuals.
