The pillar was erected to honor the renowned Eastern Aukštaitija carpenter and woodcarver Antanas Deveikis and book smuggler Liudvikas Misevičius-Kuliešius. A. Deveikis (1819–1929), a famous woodcarver from the Utena region, had a significant influence on local craftsmen with his work, creating various crosses and pillars adorned with folk ornaments. His sculptural works depict St. John of Nepomuk, Jesus of Nazareth, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and other sacred motifs. Some of these works are preserved in the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum and the Utena Regional Museum. He is buried in Pakalniai Cemetery, but the exact location of his grave is unknown.
