In 1940, on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of Lithuania's independence, members of the Lithuanian Catholic men's and women's societies erected an impressive monument near the Utena Church of Christ's Ascension—a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus standing on a high pedestal. In 1963, under Soviet orders, the monument was demolished. However, the statue of Jesus was moved to the churchyard, where it has remained.
