Stone Marking the Foundation Date of Utena

Utena is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, with a history dating back to the 13th century. The name Utena was first mentioned in a letter from King Mindaugas in 1261, in which he transferred the Utten lands to the Sword Brothers' Order. According to legend, the city was founded by Duke Utenis, who built a castle by the Utenėlė River. Archaeological studies in the Narkūnai hill forts confirm that the early inhabitants of Utena settled about 3–5 kilometers southwest of the present-day location of the city.
To commemorate the founding of Utena, a memorial stone was erected at the intersection of Aušros and Aukštakalnio streets, symbolizing the city's significant history.
