The glacially formed hill near the town of Vyžuonos, known as Vyžuonos Oz or Gallows Hill, is steeped in legend. It is believed that a pagan altar dedicated to the god Vyžas once stood here, where religious rituals took place, and later, the hill may have been used for defense. Stories tell that during serfdom, executions were carried out on this site, and in the early 20th century, battles against the Bolsheviks took place here.

In 1931, a spear-shaped monument to Vytautas the Great was erected on the hill, initiated by local youth S. Gučius, K. Saladžius, and P. Zabulionis to mark the 500th anniversary of the Grand Duke’s death. The monument was restored in 2017. Nearby stands a roofed pillar titled Jesus of Nazareth, carved by wood sculptor Stasys Karanauskas in 1992, dedicated to the memory of three Vyžuonos partisans.
