The history of the Tauragnai church dates back to the 14th century when the first church was built in 1387, one of seven dedicated during the Christianization of Aukštaitija. The original sanctuary stood about 4 kilometers from the present-day Tauragnai location, near the famous Tauragnai Hill Fort. Later, the church was moved to its current location between Lake Tauragnas and Lake Labė. Several churches stood in this area—between four and five—but all were destroyed by fires.
In 1874, a new brick church was built; however, it also suffered during World War II, being burned by German warplanes in 1944. The current Tauragnai church was restored in 1969 and remains an important religious and cultural site for the Tauragnai community to this day.
