Around 1762, Antanas Kulieša, the owner of the Pakalniai manor, established a wooden church that became an important cultural and religious center for the region. Later, when this church fell into disrepair and was demolished, in 1906, Father J. Kazlauskas, with the help of the community, built a new wooden sanctuary. Unfortunately, in 2000, this building suffered a devastating loss when a fire broke out early in the morning, destroying the church to its foundations.

After this tragic event, the people of Pakalniai faced a difficult period, but soon construction of a new church began. Now, the members of this community take pride not only in having one of the oldest wooden churches in the Utena region but also in their newly built church, which has become a modern religious center. Next to the new sanctuary stands the old wooden bell tower, preserving the history and traditions that testify to the faith and cultural heritage of the Pakalniai community.
