The modern wooden and steel pedestrian bridge over the Nevėžis River in Kėdainiai connects not only both riverbanks but also symbolizes the link between two important regions of Lithuania—Aukštaitija and Žemaitija. The bridge’s design, supported by a strong truss and concrete pillars, creates both a solid engineering foundation and an impressive spatial corridor leading to the town square. Its curved beam design adds an element of surprise, offering a stunning view of the opposite riverbank while crossing.
Historical photos show that the old bridge was equipped with ice breakers, and the design of the new bridge echoes the forms of these ice breakers, giving the structure a unique aesthetic. This bridge is more than just a simple connection between the banks—it symbolizes the link between past and present, embodying the history of Lithuania. On the left bank, the coat of arms of Aukštaitija is proudly
displayed, while on the right, the coat of arms of Žemaitija can be seen. Additionally, on the right bank, there is a bas-relief depicting the Battle of Kėdainiai in 1831, where 280 rebel soldiers, led by Count Mauricijus Prozor, successfully resisted 5,000 Russian army troops.
The bridge is especially beautiful in the evening—functional lighting highlights the path, while LED lights on the structure emphasize the bridge’s form. During festivals, the bridge is illuminated with special lighting, adding a unique charm to the town of Kėdainiai.
The first bridge over the Nevėžis in Kėdainiai was built in 1602, when Stanislovas III Kiška received the privilege from King Sigismund III Vasa to collect tolls for crossing the bridge. The current bridge, opened in 2018, is 96 meters long and 3.66 meters wide, becoming an important part of the town’s infrastructure and a popular attraction for tourists.
