The hillfort, also known as Biržuvėnai Hillfort, is located on the right bank of the Virvyčia River and was used from the 9th to 12th centuries. The northwestern part of the platform has been washed away due to changes in the Virvyčia River's course, but it is believed that this location served as an important landing place. The hillfort may have also functioned as a type of shelter where local inhabitants hid their goods and wealth and defended themselves against enemies.

At the highest eastern edge of the platform and the rampart, there is a pit marking the location of the Gorskių Chapel, which was destroyed during World War I. It is believed that a Protestant (Reformed, Calvinist) church stood on the site of the Gorskių Chapel in the 17th century. This church gave the hillfort its name, Bambizkalnis, as Calvinists were referred to as Bambizai. Biržuvėnai Hillfort is also known as Koplyčkalnis.
