The Marijampolė Rygiškiai Jonas Gymnasium History Museum is a notable attraction that draws both locals and tourists interested in exploring the region’s past. The museum was opened in 1967, celebrating the school's 100th anniversary, and has since collected over 9,500 exhibits. The main exhibition reflects the history of Marijampolė Gymnasium from the times of Imperial Russia to the restoration of independence.
The museum offers visitors a chance to learn about the most distinguished alumni who made significant contributions to Lithuania's statehood and cultural history, including
Jonas Basanavičius, Vincas Kudirka, Pranas Kriaučiūnas, Jonas Jablonskis, Algirdas Julius Greimas, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis, and the signatories of the Act of Independence of February 16, 1918. It also provides insights into the lives of many scholars and artists who helped shape Lithuanian culture and society.
The museum’s mission is to foster patriotism and encourage young people to learn about and respect their country’s history. Various educational programs are offered, designed to inspire interest in the past among students and visitors alike.
