The hillfort, located 13 km southeast of Marijampolė, has been known since ancient times. According to local legends, the ancient Lithuanians built this hillfort to defend against the Teutonic Knights, using their hats as containers to carry soil. It is said that a cellar was constructed in the center of the hillfort, where the inhabitants hid their treasures from the Teutonic Knights. This legendary story has intrigued treasure hunters, who dug a large pit in the center of the hillfort in search of hidden valuables. During wartime, trenches were dug at the top of the hillfort, and shelters were built along its slopes. Today, at the foot of the hillfort, the Kirvakalnis Festival hosts the International Living Archaeology Days.
